El almacenamiento de direcciones, se podría hacer como tu dices, pero al final depende de los desarrolladores de las aplicaciones que necesiten almacenarlas. En general es mejor usar solo DNS (aunque ello puede implicar un almacenamiento temporal en algunas apps). Y si, generalmente es posible usar IPv6 para acceder a IPv4 cuando hay dual stack en el destino. Es algo intrínsecamente soportado por las pilas. De hecho a nivel de routing, se puede usar igualmente. El IPv6 está muy bien implementado desde hace muchos años, creo que antes del 2000, y si bien no conozco el funcionamiento interno del SO, parece como si actualmente todo se maneja en IPv6, con algún módulo para compatibilidad con IPv4. Lastimosamente en una de las versiones anteriores IBM trató de incentivar el uso de IPv6 con el protocolo que intenta comunicarse con IPv6, y recién después del time-out usar IPv4. Eso salió mal, porque muchos optaron por deshabilitar el IPv6, y la recomendación quedó hasta ahora, aún cuando ya no hace diferencia. Parece que la mayoría de los profesionales del área AS/400 conocen muy poco de redes y no aprovechan las herramientas disponibles. Por ejemplo, tiene una de las mejores versiones del Apache, muy rápido y seguro, bien integrado al SO, con algunas funciones apoyadas por el micro-codigo. Si el cliente y el servidor (o ambos clientes si es un p2p) tienen IPv6, es lógico que se deba utilizar IPv6 y no IPv4, así el tráfico de IPv6 frente a IPv4, va creciendo de forma natural. Lo que ha ocurrido con diversos SO?s es que el tiempo de fall-back a IPv4 era excesivamente largo, errónea decisión del implementado (le ocurrió también a MS). Por eso desarrollamos HE (HappyEyeballs). Ahora mismo el WG HAPPY de IETF, está trabajando en la v3, que contempla no sólo IPv4 e IPv6 (con una recomendación de 50ms de fallback), sino también QUIC y el reporte de errores (hasta ahora se hacia fallback sin indicarle a nadie que había un problema). Lo de desactivar IPv6 es la respuesta fácil, y no necesariamente por culpa de IPv6, y lo hemos vivido durante años por parte de muchas compañías, especialmente ?malos implementadores? de juegos.
