The Sixth Network Security Event for Latin America and the Caribbean
(LACSEC 2011) was held within the context of the LACNIC XV meeting. The
event included presentations on different topics by regional and
international experts.
Kristen Dennesen (Verisign) made a presentation on the Latin American
Cyber Threat Landscape and 2011 Trends in Cyber Security, where she
highlighted the international trend towards integrating cyber security
into national security strategies. She also noted that malicious
activity in Latin America is at a lower level of development than the
rest of the world and that this provides an opportunity for proactive
action.
Julio Arruda (Arbor Networks) presented a report titled "Worldwide
Infrastructure Security Report, 6th edition (2010)" and highlighted that
the severity and complexity of denial-of-service (DoS) attacks continue
to increase. He also observed that DNSsec and IPv6 are two technologies
that raised concern among those surveyed.
Scott Iekel-Johnson (Arbor Networks) explained how mobile telephone
network security has so far relied on the "closed" nature of those
networks and spoke of the challenges that have arisen due to changes
that have occurred in this regard.
Fernando Gont (UTN/FRH) presented a Security Assessment of Neighbor
Discovery for IPv6 which included a Router Advertisement Guard
(RA-Guard) evasion technique used in many IPv6 networks as the first
line of defense against Neighbor Discovery attacks.
Carlos Marcelo Martinez (LACNIC) and Arturo Servin (LACNIC) made a
presentation on RPKI where they stressed the insecurity of Internet
routing infrastructure and explained current efforts to increase its
security.
To conclude, Victor Hugo Dos Santos made a presentation on the
importance of creating backup copies and how to use the Bacula solution.
He also presented the new features added in the latest version of Bacula.
The event closed with a commendation to Carlos Marcelo Martinez,
outgoing chair of the LACNIC Security Forum, who had a major part in the
forum's activities and growth during the past four years.
Also within the context of LACNIC XV, on 18 May the LACSEC community
held an informal meeting where several presentations were made. Joao
Damas (ISC) and Francisco Obispo (ISC) made a presentation on "Passive
DNS" showing how this tool can be used for purposes as varied as
fighting phishing attacks or analyzing IPv6 deployment within a country.
Carlos Marcelo Martinez (LACNIC) offered an extension of the RPKI
tutorial/workshop that had been held earlier during the week. Victor
Hugo Dos Santos demonstrated the use of Bacula for creating backups.
Finally, Fernando Gont (UTN/FRH) showed denial-of-service (DoS) attacks
based on Neighbor Discovery for IPv6.
Thus, in response to the global interest and concerns detected in this
area, the LACNIC XV event as a whole saw an increase of discussions on
various aspects of computer security.
