REPERCUSIONES DE PRENSA POR LA INTERVENCIÓN EN EL FORO DE GOBERNANZA DE 
INTERNET DE RAÚL ECHEBERRIA.

"Vamos en una dirección correcta pero tal vez no en la velocidad 
deseada", dijo Raúl Echeberría, Director Ejecutivo de LACNIC y que forma 
parte del grupo asesor especial para la puesta en marcha del Foro para 
la Gobernanza de Internet, cuya primera edición finalizó el pasado 
viernes 4 de Noviembre, en Atenas la capital griega, bajo los auspicios 
de la ONU.

El Director Ejecutivo de LACNIC opinó que una mayor participación 
institucional en los debates internacionales contribuirá a que los 
gobiernos puedan reorientar sus recursos hacia la sociedad de la 
información y descubrir las necesidades de desarrollo de políticas a 
nivel local.

"Debemos estar involucrados en los sistemas de gobernabilidad para que 
esos sistemas faciliten el desarrollo de Internet y no se conviertan en 
obstáculos", dijo Echeberría.

Asimismo Echeberría puntualizó que pese a que el español es uno de los 
idiomas más hablado, los hispanohablantes no están suficientemente 
representados en los contenidos de Internet.

Estas intervenciones generó una gran repercusión de prensa en el mundo. 
Desde El País, el Mundo, La Vanguardia de España, pasando por los 
diarios Exelsior, el Universal y El Diario de Chihuahua hasta InfoBAE de 
Argentina más de 74 diarios de todo el mundo dieron cuenta de la 
importante declaración realizada durante el Plenario sobre temas de 
diversidad en Internet realizado durante el Foro.

El Foro de Atenas, al que asisten representantes de 90 países con 1.400 
delegados, ofrece una oportunidad para que las personas vinculadas a 
Internet debatan diversos aspectos de gran importancia en igualdad de 
condiciones.

Los debates del Foro abarcaron el delicado asunto de la libertad de 
expresión en casos como el de China, así como el derecho a la privacidad 
y un mejor acceso al saber. También se ha abordo la cuestión del 
multilingüismo, una cuestión especialmente relevante para la región de 
América latina y el Caribe teniendo en cuenta que el español es el 
segundo idioma más hablado en el mundo después del inglés.

PRESS REPERCUSSIONS TO RAUL ECHEBERRIA'S INTERVENTION AT THE INTERNET 
GOVERNANCE FORUM

"We are moving in the right direction, although perhaps not as quickly 
as we would like," said Raúl Echeberría, Executive Director of LACNIC 
and member of the IGF Advisory Group created for starting the Internet 
Governance Forum, the first edition of which ended on Friday, November 
4, in Athens, with the sponsorship of the UN.

LACNIC's Executive Director expressed that greater institutional 
participation in international debates will help governments reorient 
their resources towards the information society and discover the need to 
develop policies at local level.

"We must be involved in governance systems in order for those systems to 
facilitate the development of the Internet, instead of becoming 
obstacles," said Mr Echeberría.

Likewise, Mr Echeberría noted that despite the fact that Spanish is one 
of the languages with the greatest number of speakers around the world, 
Spanish speakers are not sufficiently represented in Internet content.

These statements generated intense press repercussions around the world. 
>From the Spanish newspapers El País, El Mundo and La Vanguardia, through 
the Exelsior, Universal and El Diario de Chihuahua, to the Argentine 
InfoBAE, more that 74 newspapers worldwide reported on the important 
statements made during the Plenary on Internet diversity issued held 
during the Forum.

The Athens forum, attended by representatives from 90 countries with 
1400 delegates, offers an opportunity for individuals related to the 
Internet to debate different aspects of great importance on a level 
playing field.

The issues debated at the Forum include topics such as the delicate 
matter of freedom of speech in cases such as China, as well as the right 
to privacy and better access to knowledge. The question of 
multilingualism was also addressed, an issue which is particularly 
relevant for the region of Latin America and the Caribbean as Spanish, 
considering the number of users, is one of the most important languages, 
second only to English.
