LACNIC in the Caribbean 4 was held between July 18th and July 20th, 2012
in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti with the support of AHTIC, the meeting's local
host. More than 130 participants attended the event, almost all from the
Caribbean region. Host country participants represented 85% of all
attendees, a figure that exceeded all expectations. All sessions
included English-French-English simultaneous interpretation.
The following is a summary of the most important activities that took
place during the event:
Two training workshops on IPv6 (Basic IPv6 and Routing on IPv6) were
presented by LACNIC's technical staff. Two simultaneous sessions were
held, one focusing on IPv6 security, the other targeting non- technical
attendees.
The event's agenda also included presentations by LACNIC staff,
including a detailed overview of LACNIC's service offerings as well as
other activities and projects in which LACNIC is currently involved. In
addition, the Public Policy Forum Chair described LACNIC's public policy
development process and presented a detailed report of the policies
currently under discussion.
The second day's activities included a panel titled "ICT Solutions to
Face Crisis Situations: The Case of Haiti," which attracted much
interest and a large audience.
Raúl Echeberría, LACNIC's CEO, spoke of the organization's 10th
anniversary and presented a recap of all the activities and projects in
which LACNIC has been and continues to be involved since its creation as
well as a brief description of the institution's evolution over the past
10 years.
The importance of participation and involvement in LACNIC's processes
and activities on the part of the Caribbean community was also
discussed. The topic was presented from the point of view of several
Caribbean participants who have been involved in these processes and
attended LACNIC meetings.
The second edition of the "Women on IT" meeting was also held,
attracting a large audience of women interested in becoming involved in
training, development and implementation of these technologies. The
obstacles faced by local women trying to access education and new
technologies were discussed, as well as the difficulties in accessing
jobs requiring strong technical training.
Prestigious speakers presented other relevant topics, including the
importance of IPv6 deployment for business continuity (Owen De Long,
Hurricane Electric), experiences with IPv6 deployment in the Ca ribbean
(Brent Mc Intosh, Columbus Networks Grenada), the importance of Internet
Exchange Points (IXPs) and their proliferation in the Caribbean (Selby
Wilson, CTU), as well as a presentation by the Internet Society on
collaboration within the Internet community (Shernon Osepa, ISOC).
After the event, LACNIC's technical staff hosted a hands-on IPv6
training session for local ISP technical staff interested in the new
technology. This intensive session allowed participants to gain ha
nds-on know-how on different topics that will help them to begin
implementing IPv6 in their organizations.
LACNIC wishes to thank all the sponsors that supported this meeting and
